Fred Bowerman Kniffen oral history interview, 1990-1991.

Kniffen discusses his experiences at LSU, including the formation of the Department of Geography and Anthropology, various presidents of the university, social life of faculty in the 1930s, and Huey Long and LSU. He also describes his career, especially his work with fellow LSU professor Richard Russell. He also describes the LSU campus in the late 1920s.

Fred B. Kniffen, professor of geography and anthropology, retired from Louisiana State University in 1970, after a career that spanned 41 years. Considered a pioneer in the field of cultural geography, he rose to the rank of Boyd professor in 1967. A prolific writer, Kniffen wrote several articles and books on the cultures of the world and America. Richard Joel Russell was a geologist and geographer. He studied the river deltas of America (chiefly the Mississippi River), Spain, France, and Turkey. He also studied the coastal morphology of the Gulf of Mexico; stream patterns; arid areas of the United States; and he worked on a climatic map of California.
